Progress is a beautiful thing, no?
January 16, 2009 at 3:26 pm | In News | Leave a CommentI bought my first domain today. Well, it came free with my hosting plan. Ultimately, it will be used for my comic (which is most definitely progressing). But it has other uses, too. For example, I can use it for more than one site. Oh yes.
Right now, it has two. An installation of WordPress and ComicPress (for the aforementioned comic) which is still under development, and an installation of WordPress. This blog has been moved (imported all the old posts and everything) to this new home. The link is here.
If the comic goes well, I have room to install a forum, store, wiki, or anything else I happen to feel like to support it. Better yet, I think it will be perfect for when I want to start my story blog, because it allows advertising. Hurray!
So, I’ll see you at the new address, I hope!
Thanks for reading.

I’ve uploaded avatars for Alex and Becky. You can see them on the AI blog (which shows avatars with posts), and on their twitter pages. I’ve also updated Alex’s blog. Becky’s will take some more work.
They’re just sketches, and crude ones at that. But I’m satisfied with them at this stage, and I thought having them out in the open would motivate me to work harder to improve them.
I’ve jumped back into fiction writing, with some definite results. I’m loving it. As always, I’m at my most creative post midnight, a fact which doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
Blogging has been put on the back burner a little, but I certainly haven’t forgotten about it.
Peace out.

Twitter has taken a hold of me, and I dare not risk escaping its intoxicating clutches. Rather, I have expanded my submergence into its culture, and created two new accounts, for Alex and Becky. Following them would be a lot more interesting than following me, and if you click on either of those links, you’ll quickly find out why.
Twitter allows you to follow others if you have an account, but even without an account, you can subscribe via RSS. I tried RSS before migrating to my own account, and it worked well enough, though I would tend to get bulk updates instead of regular ones. Before that, I would simply check back every now and again, and that seemed to work just as efficiently as anything else, given my relatively low interest in the site, and the equally low number of people I followed.
The characters of Alex and Becky are a lot more to me than just the comic. I am constantly searching for new ways to expand on them, and indulge myself through them. Both have blogs, of course, and those are fine, though I find myself with little motivation to actually write them, having not fleshed out enough of their existences to write blog entries. Twitter, on the other hand, being only short updates, will not only circumvent this issue, it will allow me to develop them further, and upon achieving a satisfactory level of this, I can return to their blogs triumphant, and set about blazing a new literary trail.
I drew both of them for the first time today. Pencil sketches, nothing impressive. And nothing that will ever see the light of day, nor fall under the scrutiny of another living being. It means that now they have very real physical images associated with them to me, and that brings them one step closer to being real. With a bit of refining, and a method of colouring that is both pleasing and relatively simple, I should be reasonably close to revealing their appearances to the world (read: you).
Speaking of colouring, I have decided to try my hand at old school inking, that is, colouring with actual ink. The commonplace MO today being, of course, through Photoshop. However, to colour in Photoshop (or in my case, free equivalent GIMP) also requires the inking of the lines to be done digitally. Without a graphics tablet, the process of inking the lines digitally is messy and imprecise, and not something I am up to the challenge of just yet. So instead, I’ll do everything by hand, and then scan the finished product. I think I’ll probably still to word balloons digitally though, if not just the text. We’ll see.
Beyond that, I think I’m finally ready to start writing RoB again. My main problem right now is that the weather (yes, the weather is a problem, stay with me) is quite warm (to my sensitive self, intolerable) and I write with my laptop on, shockingly, my lap. Since my laptop generates even more heat, I am left sweaty, uncomfortable, and hot. In such a condition, I cannot possibly feel motivated to write. I can’t write with the laptop on the desk (I’ve been too far converted to slothful, bed-ridden ways) and the more I put between my legs and my laptop, the more hot I get anyway. If anyone could suggest a solution, I’d be eternally grateful. Preferably, one that won’t cost me a lot of (or any) money.
Regarding the blog story, I’ve decided that neither option services my needs perfectly, so I’m still in search of the perfect outlet. If only WordPress allowed for advertising! (Technically, they actually do, but it requires a VIP account, with a $600 set up fee and a $300 monthly fee. I know, great value, right?) Of course, if I were enough enough from it to cover a $300 monthly fee and still make a profit, I would be ecstatic. If only…
Money has become a critical factor in my life, and I am currently locked in a struggle to obtain it, without compromising my own ideals. I may be forced to do the unthinkable, and get a job I hate (Coles doesn’t count; I can’t quit because I need a stable source of income for my phone bill, if nothing else). I would personally sooner be poor, but I have commitments to other people that require to me have money, and at some point it becomes necessary to decide which is more important to me.
Anyway, I think I’ve rambled long enough. Fuck I’m hungry…

January 4, 2009 at 3:46 pm | In News | 1 CommentFurther on the story/blog concept, I have created two mockups. One using Blogger (which I just remembered does not have the capacity for multiple pages or blogs) and one using Weebly. Which one do you prefer?
I have created a poll, hopefully it shows up for you. Please vote! (It’s even in the post this time, for rss users)

So I decided I’d finally check out Twitter, see what all the fuss is about. I very much doubt it will become anything major for me, but I do enjoying following certain others, if nothing else.
Though my primary motivation are not my own tweets, I’ll add a widget to the sidebar just in case.
I have mixed feelings about twitter. On the one hand, I like the idea of constantly updated microblogging. I feel like a blog shouldn’t be updated too often, especially if the posts are fairly long. Also, I feel like a blog should contain a certain amount of content, or it feels like something of a waste. I realise that neither of these are actually rational, and there isn’t anything other than convention guiding me on this, but it’s how I feel most comfortable running my blog. In Twitter, I recognise an excellent potential companion to blogs, allowing shorter thoughts and concepts, as well as updates and I don’t really know what else.
On the other hand, I fear the dark capacity of Twitter to lead to a degeneration of content. The concept of people updating every menial, mundane element of their lives terrifies me, and so I vow, right now, to never sink to that level. With all three of my readers as my witness.
I’m far too tired to go into this now, but I may expand on it another day. Perhaps when I have more experience with Twitter, and can produce a fairer and more intellectual analysis. Right now, I need food.
Phase… whatever phase we’re up to

So, I’ve taken another step towards actually starting Almost Incidental. I’m creating a new blog for Alex and Becky (and me) as the official blog for the comic. The comic itself, I’ve decided, I’ll host on Blogger. I know there are dedicated comic hosting sites, like drunkduck, smackjeeves and keenspot, but they all require advertising to let you keep your comic there. Blogger, on the other hand, is free with no advertising, and I can put my own ads up very easily.
If it proves successful, I’ll host it myself, using a plugin for WordPress.org called ComicPress. That means I have to pay for a server and a domain thought, so I won’t do it unless I know it’ll have some degree of success.
If you read Alex and Becky’s blogs, you’ll notice they talk about creating the comic themselves. This comes from Penny Arcade, albeit loosely. The creators of Penny Arcade use the two main characters as their alter egos, essentially. So the characters within the comic are also the writer and artist OF the comic. It’s a fairly unique formula that I love. It wouldn’t work for me, of course, because I’m both the writer and artist. But I can apply a similar principle, having them represent the artist and writer in me, because those two come from very different places within me. We’ll see how it works out.
I’ll add the links in the sidebar soon, but for now the links are comic and blog.
Unimportant News of the Day

I spent a few hours today drawing a few of the Penny Arcade characters. Penny Arcade is my favourite webcomic, and the one I draw the most inspiration from. The artistic style in particular, I find really suits the vision I had/have for my own comic, which is perfect. The writing is incredible, and I hope to one day be a able to write to the standard that they do.
Anyway, the point of this is that this is the first time I’ve attempted to draw in a while, excluding some small experimentation a few months ago, which I had temporarily posted on this blog. But this is the first in relation to the comic, and I felt really good about it. Not that what I drew was of any great quality, but it was enjoyable, and I could see definite potential, and even improvement over the few hours. So, I feel really good about the future of the artistic side of the comic.
Next step, of course, is to try drawing my own characters. That will be a lot harder, because I won’t have a point of reference, other than the images in my head. And of course, I won’t be drawing it in the same way as Penny Arcade, they’re just artistic inspiration. But it’s something I look forward to.
Oh, and I’ve been playing Mario Galaxy a fair bit lately. I tried to get into it a few months ago, and it didn’t work for me. But I’ve given it a second go, and I’m really enjoying it. I still don’t like the Wiimote as a controller for a platformer, but it’s playable, and the level of difficulty is perfect. I’ll play it a bit more then give it a proper review, in lieu of anything new to review.
I haven’t written RoB much at all lately. I’ve been caught up in the comic, and also just haven’t felt any great urge to write the next part. It’s a pity, but I’ll definitely jump back into it soon. I just need to get some other stuff out of the way, and find myself another source of inspiration for it.
I think that’s about all from me.
With thanks to Ben

I have decided to name my comic strip Almost Incidental.
Any thoughts?
On a digital horse we ride

It seems today that intellectual, intelligent discussion is a thing of the past. People only want to talk about pop culture, and their own lives. No-one has anything to say about the real world, or the issues that plague us. Other than regurgitating the shit on the news, or current affairs programs. And that’s not really thinking, is it?
In response to this, and also because we felt like it, a few of us have gathered ourselves, and created a forum for just such discussions. We aim to provide a haven for those who still hold those values of true discussion, and a source of encouragement for others to join us.
It’s mostly intellectual, not always serious, but hopefully always interesting. Anyway, it’d be great if you could check it out, and tell us what you think.
